This term we’ve been busy completing lots of work towards both GCSE Maths and Essential Skills in Numeracy Qualifications.Â
To bring context and reality to these subjects, we created a fictional painting and decorating business which had been approached by a client to provide a quote for decorating the large assembly room at BTH.
Working in pairs, the students used their skills in communication, team work and technical measuring techniques to collate accurate measurements which enabled them to calculate the overall area which needed painting. They then utilised this data to price up the paint and labour costs. Finally, they used their knowledge of percentages and decimals to add an additional 10% ‘profit’ to their quotes.
This very hands-on and practical approach allowed students to relate maths to real life situations. Everyone contributed enthusiastically to the task and completed this to a high standard so I guess it worked a treat!
