2023 Prospectus

At Bryn Tirion Hall School we believe that positive attitudes and behaviour are developed through the use of rewards, praise and positive encouragement and recognition of expected, and better than expected, behaviour.

We ensure that all pupils, and the adults who support them, are involved in what constitutes expected behaviour and how we as a group should respond to incidents of unexpected behaviour.

The school has spent a great deal of time developing and creating an effective rewards system to support our pupils to be empowered and to develop strategies to manage their behaviour. Our system is called ACE Olympics, so called as it is a measure of pupils Attitude, Communication and Engagement.  This is an important tool in supporting pupils to develop expected behaviour patterns and is in line with our school moto ‘change by choice’.

How does it work?

Pupils in Bryn Tirion Hall School are given the opportunity to earn points throughout the day for their attitude, communication and engagement. At the end of a lesson, the class teacher will discuss with the pupils and supporting staff, what points the pupils will earn. The pupils will usually be able to correctly identify which points they have earned and understand where they may need to improve in subsequent lessons if they have not achieved a point in one of the three ACE areas.

Based on the number of points a pupil manages to earn during the week, they will be placed within one of the highly coveted reward groups; Gold, Silver or Bronze. This gives pupils the opportunity to access a range of different reward activities each Friday afternoon. These may include trips out to bowling, swimming, the cinema, a park trip or a country walk, to name but a few!

Pupils are encouraged to actively take part in choosing activities which will best encourage them to stay on track. Poster on the wall remind them of their goals, a daily reminder of what they are working towards and the rewards they can enjoy when they succeed.

The results

ACE Olympics is all about supporting pupils to recognise that their positive attitudes and appropriate behaviour doesn’t go unnoticed but is appreciated and duly rewarded. We recognise at BTH School that our pupils can often feel blamed and many have been unfairly treated in previous provisions, experiencing behaviour systems which haven’t always fitted their needs. This system works well as our pupils are empowered to take charge of their own behaviour and are encouraged to have discussions with teaching staff as to what is a fair mark or point. This empowers them to know what choices they need to make and encourages them to make these wisely.

Data from ACE Olympics can be clearly analysed and discussed with pupils so they can be supported to make progress in areas in which they are struggling. This means that over a period of time we expect to see pupils make strong progress in areas relating to their Attitude, Communication and Engagement which in turn supports them in all other areas of their lives.

The School Bank

Gold, Silver and Bronze rewards categories, also come with monetary benefits. This ranges from £4 – £8 per week! Every pupil in BTH School has their own bank account into which this money is deposited. There is an interest rate available for leaving money in the bank for the school year and each pupil is given the opportunity to withdraw up to £10 a week as well as requesting larger amounts in advance.

Pupils are encouraged to save their money throughout the year and to budget towards more expensive items which they may want. In this way, our banking system pupils the opportunity to learn valuable life skills from a young age and helps them to appreciate the value of money and how to effectively manage this.
