News from BTH

Lower school and nurture deliver a curriculum that has been designed to reflect the holistic needs of all pupils.

Our learning starts the moment we walk through the door with breakfast, a catch up with pastoral or class staff and reminders of routines and rewards. The aim is to provide a balance of educational, social and emotional experiences as well as supporting the development of the children’s relationships with each other and with the staff.

Primary Curriculum

Our primary curriculum is taught through an exciting and varied thematic approach with termly topics, planned cross-curricular responsibilities including the Literacy, Numeracy, Digital skills and integral skills embedded throughout. This falls in line with the curriculum for Wales and its four core purposes. We value confidence, resilience, and a growth mindset approach towards all learning experiences.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Our key stage three curriculum is everything a learner experiences in pursuit of the four purposes. Our curriculum has been developed to ensure both teaching and learning experiences shape learning outcomes. This is with the assurance that we raise standards for all and tackle the attainment gap. Our goal is to plan and deliver with a more integrated approach, for all three elements of knowledge, skills, and experiences for learning from year 7 to year 9.

In KS3 the learners will be engaging in core subjects’ Mathematics, English and Science. This will be alongside secondary subjects, art, geography, history, ICT, RE and Welsh. Literacy, numeracy and digital skills as well as integral skills are embedded throughout.

Nurture Principles

  • Children’s learning is understood developmentally
  • The classroom offers a safe base
  • Nurture is important for development of self-esteem
  • Language is understood as a vital means of communication
  • All behaviour is communication
  • Transitions are significant in the lives of children

The six principles of nurture

“The school’s curriculum provides a wide range of stimulating learning experiences that support the individual needs of pupils, ignite their curiosity and develop their wellbeing successfully.”

Estyn Report – March 2020

“Jack joined the school in year 9, following a challenging few years at another school. Right from the first introductions the atmosphere of the school came across as positive and supportive. The staff were enthusiastic and insightful, wanting to put ‘Change by Choice’ into practice.”
